Castle Neuschwanstein for Dummies
While in Munich, it would be a shame to miss out on seeing Neuschwanstein, Germany's most famous castle . Here in the land of the Brothers Grimm is a fairy-tale fantasy come to life; it was the dream of Bavaria's King Ludwig II and the inspiration behind Walt Disney's theme park castles. The castle is located in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, nestled high above the old-world village of Füssen, a truly breathtaking setting that has to be seen to be believed, and we'll tell exactly how to get there on your own. From Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) you can grab a regional train to Füssen. The train leaves from one of tracks 27 through 36 on the 51st minute of every hour (8:51, 9:51, 10:51, etc.). Tickets can be purchased at the counter or from the ticket machines at the main station. The Bayern-Ticket is valid for one day anywhere within Bavaria and will get you to Füssen and back. Bayern-Ticket - 29.- Euro when purchased at the counter, 27.- Euro purchased from the machines (good for up to 5 people) Bayern-Ticket Single - 21.- Euro when purchased at the counter, 19.- Euro purchased from the machines Once you have deboarded at the Füssen train station you can grab one of the waiting taxies or take the bus for your next leg of the journey. (Bus RVA/OVG 73 or RVA/OVG 78). Youll be dropped off in front of Tourist Information and from here you have a couple options for making your way up to the castel. If you chose to walk to the castle there's no need to follow the rest of the sheep up the beaten path. Our recommendation is that you hike your way up through the beautiful scenic waterfall gorge. A leisurely pace will have you at the castle in about 30 minutes. Inquire at Toursit Informaition and they can point out the start of the trail for you. A bus departs from Schlosshotel Lissl on Neuschwansteinstrasse and will drop you at Jugend lookout point for a glimps of the beautiful mountain top view. Then its a ten minute walk down a steep path (a route not suitable for disabled or elderly visitors). 1.80 Euro uphill, 1.- Euro downhill, 2.60 Euro roundtrip If you feel like splurging, you also have the option to travel up to the castle in the fashion befitting Bavarian kings of old; horse drawn carriages leave from Hotel Müller. 5.- Euro uphill, 2.50 downhill Tickets for the castle tour are sold from 9am to 3pm and can only be purchased in the ticket office in the villiage below the castle. Entrance into the castle is only possible on a tour, though for many the architecture seen from the outside alone is worth the trip without stepping foot inside, as the castle interior was never completed. Neuschwanstein castle is Germany's #1 tourist attraction, so be sure not to miss out on this fairy tale experience. |
