Dachau Memorial

The town of Dachau lies 15km North of Munich. A town well worth seeing in its own right, Dachau is best known as the site of the first of Hilter's concentration camps - the camp upon which all others were based. Under the banner "Arbeit macht frei" - "work will set you free" - one of the most horrific tragedies in the history of humanity took place.

We will show you exactly how to do what the high-priced tour companies charge you for; getting you there and back!

To reach Dachau from Munich you can use use the S-Bahn at the main train station (Hauptbahnhof). Take the S2 direction Dachau/Petershausen; it's about a 20 minute ride to the Dachau station. The S2 leaves every hour on the 9th, 29th and 49th minute (8:09, 8:29, 8:49, 9:09, 9:29, 9:49, etc). Once at the Dachau station go down the stairs and follow the cobblestone path to the right to the bus stop. Bus 726 takes you to the memorial (bus stop - KZ Gedenkstätte). Train tickets can be bought at the main train station from any of the ticket machines. The Munich XXL Tages Karte costs 6.50 Euro for a one day ticket; up to five people can travel with the Munich XXL Partner Tages Karte (one day ticket), which costs 11.50 Euro . These tickets are valid for both the train and bus to Dachau and will get you there and back.

Open 9am - 5pm, closed on Mondays, admission is free

Audio guides and tickets for guided tours can be obtained in the information center before entering the camp grounds. The audio guides do not follow a fixed journey through the camp, but rather allow you to choose what information you hear, in what order and in how much detail. Because the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial adheres to the highest standards of education concerning this tragic piece of German history, only a handful of guides who have undergone long months of training are allowed to conduct tours on the Memorial grounds.

  • Audio guides - 3 Euro, 2 Euro with student ID
