What about Munich?
Munich is a city of contradiction; rich in tradition while remaining one of Germany's most cosmopolitan cities, this village of a million inhabitants, as the locals fondly call it, blends the old with the new creating world class sophistication with a hometown flare. Here Lederhosen and the latest Mercedes S Class go hand in hand without anyone blinking an eye, while hearty bratwurst is served up beside gourmet delights. And of course, here you will find all of the treasures specific to Bavaria, the ones that conjure up the visions of Germany most well-known to travellers; beer gardens, Oktoberfest, kings of old and their fairytale castles. Steeped in culture, Munich also plays host to a wide array of museums, a thriving art scene and a flourishing theatre life.
To get a feel for Munich in all of its intricacies, there are a few experiences we beg you not to miss!
Head to the English Garden. It's big enough to get lost in, but no matter how badly you lose your way, there is always a beer garden right up around the bend. Walk the green paths and you'll feel as if you have stepped onto the pages of a Grimm's Brother Fairytale, although we promise there are no wicked witches lying in wait... just lots of beer.
Be sure to go on a bike tour, even if it's not ours! There is no better way to see Munich than on a bike, plus you get to feel like a local considering that about a quarter of the local population gets around with this mode of transport. Munich's old town tells the tale of centuries past and a Munich bike tour will brings that history to light.
Walk around with a beer! No, really, go ahead, it's legal here, we swear! Yep, you heard it right; Munich has no open intox laws. They even sell beer in the U-bahn (subway) kiosks.
